As a Microsoft fan for everything network, school related, I tend to agree with the Linux/Squid/DG option for filtering.

I'm a fan of both platforms, Microsoft does things well, as does Linux, and Linux really shines with Squid.

I've migrated several schools from an ISA based solution to a more controlled Squid/DG solution.

Best advice is see how Squid runs and how it serves your needs, Squid also supports aggressive caching, which in South Africa with bandwidth limitations really shines.

Nice post and since you have been using Mxit for a long time, you really do understand the best uses.

I hope to see it being used for educational purposes more often.

I like Vista too. I'm running Vista 64-bit and it works fine for me, but only because my laptop is sufficiently powerful to run it. For this reason I wouldn't necessarily recommended it on a system I didn't believe could use it satisfactorily. My mum's laptop is a cheap Acer which came with 512 MB and Vista Basic pre-installed. Her needs are very simple, just web browsing and email, but due to the specs it delivered crap performance, so I blew Vista away and replaced it with XP, and it was much nicer.

Unfortunately I think Vista got a bad rap, and it's hard sometimes to separate the genuine complaints from the irrational bashing we see so often.

Ultimately, Vista isn't really that exciting. It's good but not great, and not worth a reason for upgrading really. To be honest I was kinda hoping Linux would break out somewhat due to people's dislike for Vista, but evidently that hasn't happened yet.

Hi there

Some research shows me that this appears when you try to use the PPTP protocol for your VPN. Since it works fine on your data card, it more or less rules out the other end of the VPN. I've never connected to a VPN myself, but I think what you need to do is temporarily disable NAT and the firewall on the adsl connection, then try to connect. If that works, try again with NAT on, firewall on, then off etc.. until you hit the right combination. Maybe also try enabling uPnP on the router, long shot but it may help.

You may also want to try and use the router in it's bridge mode, so that the pc controls everything. I unfortunately don't know what else to configure, as without a VPN I can't play with the router myself.

When I coonect to a VPN I get an error 721. I am able to connect via my data card. I think the routers firewall is not allowing the connection to go through. Would you possibly know how to allow this connection to got through?
